Optical technology from Southampton as an enabler of future science, current technology and historical impact

This talk will start with an overview of the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton, and highlight key historical technological breakthroughs made at the University. The talk will discuss how technology developed at Southampton has had major impact on the modern world and show how commercialisation of University technology provides economic impact in the UK and worldwide.
By taking recent examples developed within his research group, Prof Smith will show how progress in optical technology is impacting on important areas of science – ranging from sensing of chemical and biological species through to fundamental research into quantum information processing. As well as direct impact from Southampton research the talk will show how commercialisation can lead to major new science through the use of products by research groups worldwide. Prof Smith will demonstrate that outputs from two spin-outs he founded from Southampton – Covesion Ltd and Stratophase Ltd have resulted in new results at major Universities and published in the highest impact journals including Science and Nature.

Peter G.R. Smith is a Professor in the Optoelectronics Research Centre and in Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. He graduated from Oxford University with a BA in Physics in 1990 and D.Phil in Nonlinear Optics in 1993. After a year spent as a management consultant he joined the University of Southampton. Peter has worked on a number of areas in optics research ranging from laser spectroscopy to polymer integrated-optics. He has published over 180 journal and conference papers in the fields of periodically poled materials and UV written devices at major conferences, including invited talks at national and international meetings.
Notable Achievements:
• Grant funding from EPSRC, NSF, EU, TSB >£4.2m
• Significant research output – over 190 journal papers, 1400 citations, “h-index = 21”, 12 licensed patents, 14 graduated PhD students
• Founder of two spin-out companies – www.stratophase.com (1999) and www.covesion.com (2008)
• Member of EPSRC College, panel membership at international conferences, Associate Editor IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, service on various University panels and committees.
He is co-founder of Stratophase Ltd a company developing spin-out technology from Southampton in the area of UV written waveguides devices, and of Covesion Ltd a company specialising in nonlinear optical materials.
