Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Physics and Astronomy - Institute of Condensed Matter Physics

Condensed matter physics is a branch of modern physics that focuses on the physical properties, structures, microscopic dynamical processes, and their interrelationships within materials, especially solids. It constitutes one of the largest disciplines within contemporary physics. At Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Physics and Astronomy, the condensed matter physics program is a key discipline recognized by the Ministry of Education and is a priority area for the school's development.

The Condensed Matter Physics Institute at Shanghai Jiao Tong University boasts a team of faculty members with high academic levels and a balanced age structure, exerting international influence across multiple research domains. Leveraging this institute, key laboratories such as the "Artificial Structures and Quantum Control Laboratory" under the Ministry of Education, the "Shanghai Center for Complex Physics," and the Shanghai Branch of the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science have been established.

The main objective of graduate education in condensed matter physics is to cultivate students with solid foundations in physics, independent working abilities, and innovative capabilities through world-class professors, original research, and hands-on training. In recent years, there has been rapid development in areas such as topological quantum states, novel quantum materials, superconductivity and its applications, and new energy technologies. The 'Experimental Research on Fabrication and Quantum Properties of Topological Quantum Materials' project led by Prof. Jia Jinfeng's team won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award.

Currently, the condensed matter physics program encompasses the following research directions:

  1. Condensed Matter Theory: Material calculations and simulations, quantum many-body computations, strongly correlated systems, and small quantum systems.

  2. Surface and Interface Physics: Topological quantum materials, interface high-temperature superconductivity.

  3. Superconductivity and Quantum Device Physics: Superconductivity theory and devices, correlated quantum devices, and quantum transport.

  4. Experimental Studies on Correlated Systems: Quantum magnets, unconventional superconductors, and strongly correlated oxides.

  5. Nano-Scale Light-Matter Interactions: Two-dimensional crystal materials and devices.

  6. Semiconductor and New Energy Technologies: Optoelectronic physics and devices, nano-optoelectronic materials, and solar energy technologies.

Professor Jia Jinfeng currently serves as the director of the Condensed Matter Physics Institute.
